Legality On Using Cars/Aircraft In Books?

Hello,
I'm really not sure where to put this, so please forgive me if it's in the wrong article.

I am writing a book at the moment which I am hoping to get published, and I was wondering nearly using the makes and models of aircraft or cars. Can I get contained by trouble for it?
A lot of books will have a character who drives a specific saloon. I believe a character from the 'Twilight' series had a Volvo, didn't they? They're pretty popular books. As far as i'm aware, the author never get in trouble for that.
What about when it have a prominent role in the book? For example, what if it was in the order of someone restoring a Chevrolet Bel Air, or someone who flies a Spitfire throughout the book?

It's public stuff. Disagree with first answer. Operational details are fine as long as they are correct and not defamatory.
you can use them as long as its not going into to much detail of the car/aircrafts operation
